Some foods are more commonly reported as troublemakers than others. An easy elimination approach is to simply avoid or cut down on one or more of these and observe your symptoms.
- Nightshade vegetables – Tomatoes, eggplant, white potatoes, bell peppers and paprika, among others, are consistently linked with arthritis. They contain solanine, which some believe can cause the disease. To avoid nightshades, read prepared foods labels, as they often contain tomato flakes, potato starch and pepper pieces. - Corn – Like wheat, corn is noted in largely uncontrolled studies, cited by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, as causing deterioration of grip strength in RA patients.
- Eggs – Eggs are cited in a preliminary report, referenced by NIAMS, as contributing to arthritis symptoms.
